FRENCH BULLDOGS DON'T COME FROM FRANCE

Despite its name, the French bulldog has English origins, hailing from the city of Nottingham. When English artisans lost their jobs in the wake of the Industrial Revolution, many fled to France, where their skills remained in demand. They brought their dogs with them, and the pet's popularity in France quickly outpaced its popularity in its native England. From then on, France was the breed's adopted home country.

THEY CAN'T SWIM.

As cute as they are sadly, their squat frame and bulbous head, French bulldogs can’t swim, so pool owners should keep a watchful eye on their pups. Keep in mind that if you plan a beach vacation, your furry friend might feel a little left out. 

THEY'RE SENSITIVE TO CRITICISM.

Frenchies are very sensitive, so they do not take criticism lightly. French bulldogs respond better to positive reinforcement and encouragement. Son dont let your guard down and keep them always happy.

THEY HAVE TWO STYLES OF EARS. 

Originally, French bulldogs had rose-shaped ears, similar to their larger relative, the English bulldog. English breeders much preferred the shape, but American breeders liked the unique bat ears. When a rose-eared bulldog was featured at the Westminster Kennel Club in 1897, American dog fanciers were very angry. 

THERE WAS A FRENCH BULLDOG ON THE TITANIC

Robert W. Daniel brought his French bulldog with him on board the RMS Titanic for the ill-fated cruise. Not just any dog, 2-year-old Ch. Gamin de Pycombe was a champion show dog who had cost Daniel the equivalent of what would be more than $20,000 today. Daniel survived the disaster and lived until 1940. Gamin de Pycombe was not as fortunate. He was last seen futilely swimming for his life in the freezing water.
